The St. Jago Primary School community gathered recently for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the official opening of its refurbished kitchen. The project made possible through the generosity of Jamalco, has transformed the cooking facilities, providing a safer and more efficient environment for staff and students.
The renovation included the installation of new cupboards, a fresh coat of paint, floor stripping, and a brand-new industrial stove. Principal Mrs. Thompson expressed heartfelt gratitude to Jamalco for its ongoing partnership and support, stating, “This assistance is timely. Our cook was operating in dangerous conditions with a leaking hose on the old stove. We are thrilled to have a modern and safe kitchen.”
In her remarks, Corporate Communications and Public Relations Manager, Donna Marie Brooks emphasized the company’s dedication to building better communities. “Safety is a major priority for Jamalco, and we are proud to have played a part in enhancing the school’s kitchen.” Miss Brooks added that Jamalco was deeply concerned about the hazardous conditions the cook was facing, and “recognized that ensuring safety must be our utmost concern, particularly regarding children. We believe that every child deserves a secure and healthy space to learn and grow, and we are happy we made it a reality.”
Education Officer Mrs. Rose saluted Jamalco for consistently responding to the needs of schools in its operating communities. “The company’s commitment to education and community development is truly commendable, and the Ministry of Education is mindful of your selfless, consistent support. Continuing she added, “We are truly grateful, and I extend our heartfelt appreciation to Jamalco.”
Senior Mines Planning Supervisor, Sydia Williams-Johnson, representing Lands, Mines and Lands Legacy Director, Timothy O’Driscoll, reiterated the company’s commitment to the school, “We are aware of our impact on the school and will continue to support their endeavors. In an announcement that received a rousing round of applause, she advised the gathering that “Mr. O’Driscoll has pledged to pave the driveway leading to the classrooms which is a hazard for teachers, parents, and students, especially during rainy days.” Principal Mrs. Thompson highlighted the significance of this project for the students, “This refurbished kitchen means our children will receive a warm meal while at school, which is essential for their growth and development. A nutritious meal also impacts their ability to learn and focus in class. The new stove eliminates the risks of fires associated with the old equipment, ensuring a safer environment for staff and students and I am most appreciative of this gift. The refurbished kitchen is a testament to Jamalco’s dedication to supporting education.
